The Y Life sends the warmest of wishes to our friends and family of the Jewish faith, as they begin to celebrate Hanukkah tonight!
The traditional holiday commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.
Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days, and is also known as the Festival of Lights and/or the Feast of Dedication.
2015 Hanukkah dates… Sunset, 6th of December to nightfall, the 14th of December!
Jewish families observe the holiday with kindling of the lights on a unique candelabrum, called the menorah. The nine-branched menorah has one candle to be lit on each night of Hanukkah, with an additional visually distinct branch, usually positioned above the others called the shamash, and is used to light the other candles.
The menorah is lit in combination with eating foods like doughnuts and latkes and playing dreidel!
May everyone have a happy and healthy holiday!
