The grapefruit otherwise known as Citrus × paradisi besides being is a subtropical citrus tree by nature… Not only are grapefruits known for their sweet and sour contours, but it is a hybrid fruit, whose parental lineage includes the sweet orange!
This rounded yellow- orange fruit has skin and is an oblate spheroid in shape, much like an orange! The flesh is segmented and acidic, varying in color… But here is a great tip… generally, the redder varieties are sweeter!
In the 18th-century, the first bred Grapefruit was born in Barbados and is said to be one of the “Seven Wonders of Barbados” and was brought to Florida by Count Odet Philippe in 1823.
The United States is the top producer of grapefruit and pomelo followed by China and South Africa… The United States produces more than 1,580,000 metric tons.
The many Grapefruit varieties are determined by the fruits color, which is caused by the pigmentation of the fruit at its state of ripeness. The ripeness in turn influences the range of flavors… from highly acidic and even sour to sweet and tart. You see, Grapefruit mercaptan, is a sulfur-containing terpene: organic strong smelling substances which are aromatic hydrocarbons that have a strong influence on the taste and odor of grapefruit and protect the fruit from parasites!
BUT… Here is your warning YLifers, there are an estimated 85 drugs, grapefruit is known to have an adverse reaction with! Since the fruit contains a number of polyphenolic compounds, when broken-down the grapefruit can increase the bioavailability and in turn multiplying the effects of other drugs! Many drugs are impacted by consumption of grapefruit juice. When the metabolizing enzyme is inhibited, less of the drug will be metabolized and unexpected high doses of the drug in the blood could, in turn lead to fatal drug toxicity!
And if you didn’t know, you know now… BIRTH CONTROL PILLS are one of the many drugs whose effects are inhibited by GRAPEFRUIT! Be careful and be conscious 🙂
