How to: Lunch @ Work

Balancing work in the 21st century and having a life can be quite the daunting task for Y’s… we seem to get whisked into the whirlwind of our cultures motto, where stopping at nothing to achieve success is the code to which all must oblige. In that mess of a daily routine we seem to become overwhelmed by responsibility and forget the importance in taking care of ourselves.

One of the best ways to institute a healthy routine into your working lifestyle is to take 15 minutes every night to prepare your meal for the next day. First and foremost, go out and purchase a reliable, thermal lunch- bag and some re-usable plastic food storage containers in varying sizes. Always keep a zip-lock with some basic necessities: sugar packets, a honey packet, various teas, salt, pepper and disposable silverware in your box at ALL times… trust us, these will come in handy!

Every Sunday steam a vegetable assortment (i.e. green beans, carrots, peas and/or lima beans) drizzle with Olive Oil, Salt, Pepper, Dill Weed and set them away in their respective containers; all you have to do during the week is place the refrigerated container in your lunch – bag and go! It takes effort to be healthy, if you leave the prepping for the morning, you will end up driving through a window for French fries and a frosty at lunchtime and feeling guilty when your skinny jeans turn into ‘jeggins’.

Always keep an apple and an orange in your bag… when that mid-afternoon crunch sets in and you have a mountain of work to get through before 6, it’s better to have a trustworthy healthy snack to reach for- than a quick- fix from the vending machines on the 3rd floor. Raw carrots and hummus are always great snacks to pack for a long day and they keep fairly well in your bag. Essential Vitamin A and Protein will keep you feeling balanced and energetic… and if you remember to sprinkle a pinch of Cayenne Pepper on your hummus, the pepper suppresses appetite and will help cure the pre-dinner tummy grumblers.

A great way to stay eating lean at work is to prepare a light salad for your main course at noon! Start by filling a large container with your favorite greens, layer on some colorfully sliced bell peppers, strawberries, cucumbers, figs, cabbage and carrots and garnish with herbs. In a small side container pour 1 ounce of Extra Virgin Olive Oil and 1 Tbsp. Balsamic Vinegar, make sure to shake your dressing well before pouring it over your salad, do a little salad bowl dance and you have a delicious salad that not only saved you calories, but cash as well!

Last but certainly not least, always pack a flavored sparkling water! This simple act will prevent you from venturing out for a soda, but yet still give you that bubbly effervescent sensation you were craving. Trick your mind and belly with healthy alternatives to the norm!
