We think we’re doing ourselves a favor by drinking diet soda but the truth is, whether it’s packed with sugar or artificial sweeteners, neither do our waistlines or health a favor.
Next time you want to order that diet soda, take this into account:
A study by the American Diabetes Association, found drinking one diet cola a day was associated with a 36% greater risk of developing metabolic syndrome which could include high blood sugar, unhealthy cholesterol levels and a fatter belly.
Tricks Your Brain
Artificial Sweeteners trick your brain into thinking it’s consuming real sugar causing it to get confused, according to Discovery Health. Once this happens repeatedly, next time you consume sugar, your body may release blood-sugar regulating hormones which could have negative effects on your metabolism.
You May Crave More Sweets
Artificial sweeteners taste sweeter than normal sugar. By constantly drinking something with artificial sweeteners, you may find things that are naturally sweetened or sweetened with sugar may not taste as sweet to you anymore which may cause you to crave other sweets.
You May Have A Wider Waistline
A study by the University of Texas, found a wider waist may be associated with drinking diet soda. The group found the correlation at the end of a 10 year study which showed diet soda drinkers had a 70% greater waist line than non-artificially sweetened soda drinkers. While it is possible other eating habits may have caused this, there was still a connection found between the two.
So while they are tasty, it’s always good to know what you’re putting in your body. We only have one!
