Y not PAMM?!

Just PAMMing Around…

Word around town is… Miami is THE place to be this weekend as they kick off the renowned 15th annual Food Network South Beach Food and Wine Festival!

If there is one thing we know at The Y Life, is that nothing goes better with Wine and Food, than ART!

L went to check out the Perez Art Museum Miami for the first time and was amazed by the incredulous works of art displayed at the Museum right in the middle of Miami, at Museum Park on Biscayne Bay…

PAMM is a modern and contemporary art museum dedicated to collecting and exhibiting international art of the 20th and 21st centuries. You see, this museum is located in one of the most diverse regions in the country, so the unique influence of art from the Caribbean, North and South American cultures is constantly adding a certain vibrancy to the texture of the pieces being featured at the museum, in addition to just showcasing this cities societal landscape via art.

As Art Basel has done wonders to hone Miami’s thriving community of artists, the city now has a booming art-engaged public, who have been driving Miami’s demand for a world-class museum and can just say, they certainly got one! PAMM also uses its platform to promote progressive art education and contribute to the revitalization of Downtown Miami and Wynwood (The Design District) where many local art galleries are bustling with Millennial art!

As I was researching PAMM, I came across their Mission Statement, simple yet eloquent and flawless… “Pérez Art Museum Miami exists to improve the quality of life for individual residents of and visitors to Miami-Dade County, as well as social life in the communities they represent, by facilitating catalytic engagements with the most progressive visual arts of our time.”

One of the most amazing things I feasted my eyes on, were the hanging gardens! Yes, you heard right… Hanging Gardens! Wondering who designed something so unique? The answer is… Patrick Blanc, in cooperation with Herzog & de Meuron. The two spent 2 1/2 months making the gardens, used 54,700 plants equating to 77 plant species to create the most magical hanging gardens I have ever seen. It’s as though they appear to be tree barks, floating from the rooftops and implanted with beautiful plants!

Who is PAMM named after? …

Jorge Pérez is an art collector who lives in Miami and was born to Cuban parents, but grew up in Bogotá, Colombia. His family moved to Colombia, after losing everything they had on the island of Cuba to the Communist dictatorship of Fidel Castro. He developed his passion for art, culture, architecture and urban planning throughout his youth and when it blended with his knack for being a passionate collector… Magic Happened!

Perez has been a museum trustee since 1996. When they announced plans for this new facility, he immediately saw the project as another important step in Miami’s artistic development and jumped on it! Jorge was actually one of the first people to pledge his financial support to the project, contributing more than 40 million dollars in cash and art… That is Y the museum was named in his honor.

My favorite part of the experience? Taking the time to reflect on the art I had just witnessed on the PAMM‘s outdoor deck, while sitting on these awesome large wooden chairs and sipping on mint tea.

The moment couldn’t have been more perfect, as the cool ocean breeze whisked through my hair and heart, I was able to soak in this modern museum moment, which was like no other.

So my YTip is… Take your time at PAMM, to soak in what you learned while grazing through the museum and meditate on that, out on the modern concrete veranda.

Only thing they aren’t open everyday, but totally worth the $16 walk in ticket cost!

PAMM is located at…

1103 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, FL 33132

Happy Eating and reading!
